Month of Democracy

What is democracy today? ​ When I was growing up there was still a sense that we lived in a real democracy with the possibility to make genuine political progress as an informed peoples. ​ Today the concept of democracy seems to be in crisis, in large part due to nation states becoming representatives of international capital, and reactionary populist movements growing in both Europe and the United States. ​ Throughout the month of August The Portal will be dedicated to exploring the concept of democracy, as well as situating this concept in the context of our historical time. ​

The month will feature guests writer Helen Rollins who will be joining us in The Edge for an exploration of Capitalism and Inequality; political scientist Benjamin Studebaker who will be leading a Thought Lab on the Crisis of American Democracy; and philosopher Nina Power who will be helping us circle a Real Talk around the question of fascism. ​ To get involved in the events, or to sign up for one individual The Edge or Thought Lab session, check the links below:
